What a brilliant idea - I definitely will be better off picking a lead and reins based on how these samples feel in hand. I would never have thought of so many nuances. Sure, thickness and color, but drape, stiffness, slide, and even the variety of sizes. I still don't know the best pick for each application based on my hand size and preferences, but I know I'll get closer to perfect on my order - and I'm sure I'll be happy. I do think a guide on which rope for which application and why might be helpful - like if you're going to do ground work on a long lead and then transfer to the saddle, is there benefit in using the same rope type for the lead and the reins? I would think things might be more clear but perhaps changing diameter by application helps to 'maintain' the feel?

Can't beat this, for your $5 you get 13 "swatches", samples, of the various sizes and colors of the halter and rein rope materials, so you know what "firm" means, how they feel in your hands, and all the colors represented. Shipped to you free, plus the $5 you paid for the sample is sitting as a credit on your account so when you order you get it credited automatically. Only thing was the labels on the samples need to be updated as they didn't reflect the product descriptions on website, so I had to call and ask what DBP meant (double braid polyester, which is now called yacht). After getting the sample, I placed my order for rope halters and mecate reins.
